When should I make a cake for a saturday?

My school's having a cake contest on Saturday. The cakes have to be at the school by 12am on the day, what day should I make the cake so it's not hard for judging but still leave's time to fix any mistakes? And how would I decorate it well for a 50th anniversary theme? Ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
